Tyson Etienne’s team-high 21 points off the bench helped the Atlanta Hawks overcome a sizable deficit and notch an 87-86 win over the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA 2K23 Summer League on Thursday afternoon at Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.
After a hotly contested opening period that the Spurs emerged from with a slim 21-20 lead, San Antonio appeared to take control by expanding its advantage another 12 points prior to halftime. The Hawks began to claw back in the third period, whittling away four points from their deficit, and they then completed a comeback punctuated by a spectacular driving layup on Etienne’s part with 14 seconds remaining. Atlanta finished with an impressive 40.9% success rate from 3-point range and forced 18 turnovers.
Etienne complemented his aforementioned scoring tally for the Hawks with two rebounds and two steals. Sharife Cooper followed with 15 points, four assists and two rebounds. Rookie second-round pick Tyrese Martin supplied 13 points, four boards, four assists, one steal and one block. Justin Tillman posted 11 points, three rebounds, one assist and two blocks.
Spurs first-round pick Blake Wesley paced San Antonio with 20 points, six assists, two rebounds and two steals. Ky Bowman tallied 14 points, three boards, two assists and two steals. Rookie 20th overall selection Malaki Branham furnished 13 points and two rebounds. Josh Carlton registered 11 points, nine boards, three blocks and one steal.
The two teams now await the finalizing of their playoff matchups Saturday.
