Trey Murphy scored a game-high 22 points to lead the New Orleans Pelicans to an 80-79 overtime win over the Golden State Warriors in the MGM Resorts Summer League on Sunday at Cox Pavilion.
It was a competitive contest from the jump, with multiple lead changes and a largest lead of only seven points (when the Warriors led 7-0 in the first quarter). The score remained tight down the stretch, until Naji Marshall came up with a last-second tip-in for the Pelicans to force extra time. The Pelicans kept the momentum going with the first points in the extra frame, and after the Warriors took a one-point lead with just under a minute left, the Pelicans capitalized again at the last second, as Murphy scored the game-winning bucket with 1.4 seconds left on the clock.
Murphy, a first-round pick out of Virginia, added six rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while shooting 8-for-12 from the field, to lead the Pelicans. Marshall followed up with 14 points, 12 rebounds, three assists and a block, while rookie Herbert Jones logged 10 points, three rebounds and two blocks.
Jonathan Kuminga led the way for the Warriors with 17 points, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block in 26 minutes. Justinian Jessup added 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and a steal. First-round pick Moses Moody did not play due to a chest injury.
