LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky forward Nick Richards will enter the NBA draft and forego his final season of collegiate eligibility by signing with an agency.
The junior, standing at 6-foot-11, is the fourth Wildcats starter to go professional. After a standout season, he was recognized as a first team All-Southeastern Conference pick by The Associated Press and league coaches. From his sophomore season, his scoring average per game saw an impressive increase of 10 points to 14.0. He started in 30 of the 31 games, contributing to the Wildcats’ SEC regular season title with a 25-6 record. However, the postseason was called off due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Richards ranked fourth in the nation for shooting at 64% and was named to the SEC all-defensive team, averaging 7.8 rebounds and 2.13 blocks per game.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Richards, hailing from Kingston, Jamaica, expressed gratitude to his coaches and teammates from Kentucky for his consistent progress. He announced his decision to chase his ultimate dream of becoming an NBA player, adding that his time at Kentucky has adequately prepared him for this step.
Richards’ announcement followed a day after top scorer Immanuel Quickley declared for the draft. Guards Ashton Hagans and Tyrese Maxey declared their professional status last week, with Hagans on Sunday.
