Former All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas is getting another crack at playing in the 2021-22 season and will reportedly join the Dallas Mavericks for tonight’s game. Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein and Shams Charania of The Athletic report Thomas is en route to Sacramento for the Mavs’ game there tonight (10:30 ET, NBA TV).

Thomas was signed by the Los Angeles Lakers on Dec. 17 on a 10-day deal but was not retained after that deal expired. He appeared in four games for the Lakers, averaging 9.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting 30.8% overall and 22.7% on 3-pointers.
Before that deal, Thomas last played an NBA game during the 2020-21 season when the New Orleans Pelicans signed him to a 10-day contract. The 32-year-old averaged 7.7 points across three games during that stint.
Thomas signing to play against the Kings is a bit of career symmetry for him as well. He was selected by Sacramento with the final pick in the 2011 draft and spent three seasons with the Kings (2011-14). During that time, he averaged 15.3 ppg, 2.5 rpg and 4.8 apg in 216 career games (153 starts).
An All-Star and Kia MVP candidate with the Boston Celtics in 2015-16 and ’16-17, Thomas has been slowed by a myriad of injuries since then. He has played with eight teams in his career thus far: the Sacramento Kings, Phoenix Suns (2014-15), Boston Celtics, Cleveland Cavaliers (2017-18), Los Angeles Lakers (2017-18; 2021-22), Denver Nuggets (2018-19), Washington Wizards (2019-20) and New Orleans Pelicans.
