Native American Connections has served as a beacon of hope and empowerment in the Phoenix community for over 50 years. Its mission centers on improving the lives of individuals and families through three pillars — health, housing, and community — integrating Native American cultural traditions into each area.
From offering culturally competent behavioral health services to providing affordable housing and community development programs, NAC strives to serve diverse populations, with a particular focus on meeting the needs of Native Americans. According to Lisa Hall, NAC’s senior director of business development, these foundational elements are crucial for addressing the complex needs of the community.
Preserving culture, providing healing
Central to NAC’s approach is the preservation of Native American heritage. The organization integrates traditional healing practices into its programs, combining them with evidence-based therapies to support individuals struggling with trauma, addiction and other challenges.
For those in substance use recovery, NAC offers residential programs that emphasize both cultural connection and modern therapeutic approaches, creating a holistic path to healing. This commitment extends beyond service delivery; NAC focuses on addressing systemic barriers that hinder self-sufficiency among Indigenous populations.
In Maricopa County, where Native Americans are overrepresented in the homeless population, NAC offers targeted outreach to build trust and provide support. The organization’s work includes combating the negative impacts of fraudulent sober living providers that have taken advantage of Indigenous individuals, which has further contributed to housing instability.
Partnering with the Suns
NAC’s collaboration with the Phoenix Suns exemplifies the power of community partnerships. Their relationship spans many years, with the Suns providing support through ticket donations and financial contributions. In 2023, the Phoenix Suns Charities awarded $10,000 to NAC to preserve the history of the Phoenix Indian School’s alumni.

One of the most impactful aspects of this partnership has been NAC’s recent $225,000 grant from the NBA Foundation, allocated over 18 months to enhance programs for homeless youth. These funds have enabled NAC to expand services like street outreach, day drop-in centers and the HomeBase Emergency Shelter, providing young people with a safe space, access to basic needs, and opportunities for personal growth.
Additionally, NAC was invited to the Footprint Center for the NBA Foundation’s presentation on the national expansion of their grant program, further solidifying the connection between the organization and the Suns.
A success story
The impact of NAC’s work is best seen through stories like that of Daisy Edwards.
Facing homelessness after her mother abandoned their home, Edwards said she found refuge at NAC’s HomeBase Youth Services. Despite the uncertainty of her situation, she said she remained committed to finishing high school while participating actively in student government and athletics.
After graduation, Edwards said she sought new opportunities, exploring college and the workforce with the guidance of NAC’s staff. With their support, she secured scholarships for an EMT program, found employment and saved enough money to transition into her own housing.
Honoring Indigenous Peoples’ Day
Indigenous Peoples’ Day holds deep significance for the NAC, offering a chance to honor Indigenous resilience and contributions. This year’s observance emphasized educating the community about the complex history of boarding schools through visits to the Phoenix Indian School Visitor Center, urging those to learn and reflect.
