Bucks, relatives say Antetokounmpo’s social media was hacked

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo’s social media accounts were hacked on Thursday afternoon and several bizarre and offensive tweets were posted, according to the Milwaukee Bucks, Antetokounmpo’s brother and the player’s representatives.

Over a dozen tweets surfaced on Antetokounmpo’s feed within roughly a five-minute timeframe. It was apparent that someone other than the current MVP was responsible for the posts. These tweets contained racial slurs, vulgar attacks on other athletes, and a false assertion that Antetokounmpo had contracted coronavirus.

“Giannis’ social media, phone, email, and bank accounts have been compromised!” tweeted Kostas Antetokounmpo, a forward for the Los Angeles Lakers. “He sincerely apologizes for all the inappropriate and distasteful messages posted. He will return as soon as possible. The comments made by the hacker were absolutely unacceptable and vile!”

Giannis Antetokounmpo’s account quickly removed the tweets after they were posted.

On Thursday night, Giannis Antetokounmpo tweeted to confirm that his account was hacked. He expressed feeling “terrible” for the players who were named in the malicious and false tweets.

“Antetokounmpo tweeted, “The tweets and posts were incredibly inappropriate. I am very disappointed and disgusted that someone would utter such awful things!”

In a statement, the Bucks confirmed that an investigation is in progress. The hacking has also been confirmed by Octagon, Antetokounmpo’s agency.
