Arizona State's White declares for NBA Draft

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Arizona State junior big man Romello White is joining teammate Remy Martin in declaring for the NBA Draft.

On Wednesday, White announced his decision, just two days following Martin’s declaration for the Draft.

“White announced, “I have decided to submit my name to the NBA draft committee to receive feedback. My lifelong dream has been to play in the NBA, and this is a step towards achieving that goal.”

White, a 6-foot-8 power forward from Atlanta, was the key interior player for Arizona State during his junior year. Despite regularly facing double teams, he averaged 10.2 points, had a shooting average of 57% from the floor, and secured 8.8 rebounds per game.

White had an impressive freshman season, averaging 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds, although his performance slightly dipped during his sophomore year.

In his first two seasons, the Sun Devils made it to the NCAA Tournament and were on track to make it three in a row for the first time since 1980-81. However, the college basketball season was canceled due to the coronavirus.

“Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley tweeted, “I strongly support Mello’s decision to explore the NBA draft process!!””

If White and Martin decide to stay in the Draft, the Sun Devils will have to fill several positions next season.

Arizona State suffered the loss of seniors Rob Edwards and Mickey Mitchell due to graduation and experienced three players entering the transfer portal. These players include Khalid Thomas, Elias Valtonen, and walk-on Kyle Feit, who played inconsistently. Their transfers leave Hurley with a depleted roster, especially if White and Martin decide not to return.
