Arizona State's White declares for NBA Draft

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Arizona State junior big man Romello White is joining teammate Remy Martin in declaring for the NBA Draft.

On Wednesday, White announced his decision, just two days following Martin’s declaration for the Draft.

“White announced, “I’ve decided to submit my name to the NBA draft committee to receive feedback as I strive to fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA.”

White, a power forward from Atlanta who stands at 6-foot-8, was the main inside presence for Arizona State during his junior year. Despite consistently being double-teamed, he averaged 10.2 points, shot 57% from the field, and secured 8.8 rebounds per game.

White experienced a robust freshman season, averaging 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds, but saw a minor decline in his sophomore year.

In his first two seasons, the Sun Devils made it to the NCAA Tournament, and were on track to make it three consecutive times for the first time since 1980-81. However, the college basketball season was canceled due to the coronavirus.

“Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley tweeted his strong support for Mello’s decision to explore the NBA draft process!!”

If White and Martin stay in the Draft, the Sun Devils will have to fill several gaps in their lineup next season.

Arizona State saw seniors Rob Edwards and Mickey Mitchell graduate and three players have already entered the transfer portal: Khalid Thomas, Elias Valtonen, and walk-on Kyle Feit. These players had inconsistent play time, but their transfer still leaves Hurley with a depleted roster, especially if White and Martin do not return.
