Tonight’s looming showdown is a tale between two teams heading in opposite directions.
The Braves are currently second in the NL East, but wins have been hard to come by. Not only has Brian Snitker’s club dropped seven of its last 11 outings, but it heads into this matchup on a three-game losing strike, having been outscored 17-9 along the way. If that isn’t grim enough, Atlanta is also 3-6 SU across its last nine road games.
Meanwhile, the Orioles are looking for a fifth consecutive victory after sweeping the lowly Rays on the road. The sweep was just an example of the recent success that Baltimore has amassed, proven by a 14-4 SU record in the last 18 games. That’s without mentioning how the O’s have also won five of their last seven home games.
Baltimore’s recent home success stems from it averaging an impressive 5.9 runs per game during that stretch. Conversely, Atlanta is averaging just 2.8 runs in its last five away contests.
The Orioles’ offense has been performing well at Camden Yards recently.
Nevertheless, scoring runs might be difficult for the home team tonight. After all, the Braves are rolling with left-handed starter Max Fried, who currently holds the fifth-best NL Cy Young odds (+1100) on BetOnline. The three-time Gold Glove winner has been excellent, going 6-2 with a 2.93 ERA and a career-low 6.5 hits per nine innings across 12 starts.
It is worth noting, though, that Fried surrendered five earned runs and two homers in six innings when he faced Baltimore last May. Atlanta picked up a 9-4 loss that day.
As for the Orioles, you can expect to see Albert Suarez back on the mound. He’s also surrendered only three earned runs in his last 19 2/3 innings on the mound.
Can Braves LHP Max Fried outperform Orioles RHP Albert Suarez tonight?
Tonight, we’re taking the Orioles to pull off the upset at home. The Braves are favored due to Fried getting the start, but this is a team that just dropped three straight games to the Nationals. The Orioles are a much bigger threat and have been playing terrifically at Camden Yards all year on top of the fact that they’re also 13-5 SU against lefties.
As for the best bet, though, let’s take the Under on the 8-run total. For starters, the Under is 6-2 in Fried’s last eight appearances while Suarez’s last three starts saw a combined average of 5.7 runs scored.
The Under is also 6-2 across the last eight Braves-Orioles matchups which averaged 6.9 runs per game. Considering how each of the last five tilts between these teams at Camden Yards missed their projected totals, I don’t expect an overwhelming amount of offense tonight.
