The Miami Dolphins might be on their third starting quarterback of the young season come Week 4.
Backup quarterback Skylar Thompson was knocked out of Sunday’s 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with what head coach Mike McDaniel described as a “pretty painful” rib injury, which puts his status for Miami’s Sept. 30 game against the Tennessee Titans in question.
McDaniel said that the Dolphins would have a better idea about Thompson’s injury on Monday.
Thompson was thrust into the starting lineup after Tua Tagovailoa suffered a concussion against the Bills in Week 2. Tagovailoa eventually was placed on injured reserve, sidelining him for a minimum of four games.
Thompson struggled in nearly three quarters of action against a dominant defensive effort from the Seahawks. He completed 13 of 19 passes for just 107 yards and failed to lead the Dolphins on a drive longer than five plays. Veteran Tim Boyle, who came on in relief of Thompson, went 7-of-13 passing for 79 yards.
In their first game without Tagovailoa, the Dolphins failed to score a touchdown for the first time since McDaniel took over as head coach in 2022.
McDaniel told reporters after the game that any fix for the offense begins with himself.
“Bottom line, I see the quarterback as an extension of the offense, and the offense is an extension of me,” he said. “Three points, I’ve never won a game scoring three points. So I think collectively starting with me it just needs to be better, and we’ve got to get it figured out fast.”
