Yesterday, the New York Liberty made a serious statement to the rest of the WNBA by going into Mohegan Sun Arena and handing the Connecticut Sun their first loss of the season. After taking care of business with a fellow championship contender, the Liberty have a quick turnaround for a vastly different challenge, a home matchup with the cellar-dwelling Washington Mystics (3:00 pm ET, NBA TV).
In their matchup with the 9-0 Sun, the Liberty saw an early 12-point lead evaporate and trailed the Sun by three entering the fourth quarter. But New York (10-2) finished as strongly as they started, outscoring Connecticut 25-15 to leave Uncasville with an 82-75 win.
After facing the WNBA’s last unbeaten team, the Liberty make the quick turnaround to meet the league’s last winless team to close out their first back-to-back of the season.
The Mystics (0-11) have been more competitive than their record might seem to indicate, and they have been respectable in two losses to the Liberty this season. Unfortunately, they still have not won since defeating the Liberty 90-88 at Barclays Center in their regular season finale last season.
That team, however, had Elena Delle Donne, Brittney Sykes, and Natasha Cloud, none of whom they will have for today’s battle in Brooklyn.

Washington Mystics vs New York Liberty Betting Analysis
Even after playing on the road yesterday against one of the best teams in the WNBA, should we expect this be aa cakewalk for the Liberty?
Based on what the Mystics have shown in their first two meetings with the Liberty, as well as the quick turnaround for the Liberty, another competitive game could be in the cards.
The first meeting came on the opening night of the WNBA season, and after three quarters, the Mystics were eight points up and in line to begin with an upset of the Liberty. However, New York outscored Washington 26-13 in the fourth quarter for an 85-80 win.
The second meeting was the second win of the Liberty’s current six-game win streak, a 90-79 win at Barclays Center on May 31. In that game, New York sent the Mystics to the mat with a 27-10 start. Washington shook it off and came all the way back to take the lead twice in the fourth quarter. In the end, however, the Liberty closed out the game and a double-digit win with a 15-4 run.
Will there be a similar outcome in today’s matchup? The Mystics have five losses by six or fewer points, and they have lost by double digits only three times. Plus, they have already shown that they can hang with the Liberty, both with and without Sykes.
However, in addition to Sykes (ankle), the Mystics will also be without Shakira Austin (hip) for a fourth straight game, which depletes their resources even further.
Still, given their competitiveness to this point even in the face of defeat after defeat, Washington shouldn’t be counted out, at least in covering the spread. After all, this is a big spread, and the Liberty just played their toughest game of the season yesterday.
