The 2024 NFL season is closer than ever with the preseason action finally beginning with Thursday’s Pro Football Hall of Fame Game. The next months will be littered with preseason matchups before the 53-man rosters are finalized and the meaningful football games can begin.

But even though the regular season is just over a month away, it isn’t too early to start thinking about the upcoming action — especially when it comes to projected win totals. After all, it can be a fun exercise to predict how a given team will perform this fall and there are usually a few teams who either exceed or fail to meet expectations.

With that being said, let’s look at four sleeper teams who I predict will go over their 2024 projected win totals next NFL season.

Indianapolis Colts — o8.5 Wins (-120)

It isn’t a secret that the Indianapolis Colts haven’t experienced much success since Andrew Luck called it a career nearly five years ago. Since then, the Colts have averaged just 8.0 wins over the last five seasons, leaving many to wonder if they have what it takes to surpass this year’s projected win total.

But while some people are underrating the Colts, I could see them finishing with nine or more wins. For starters, they finished with the Over last season and that was with starting quarterback Anthony Richardson and leading rusher Jonathan Taylor missing a combined 20 games. With the dynamic duo fully healed — along with the likes of Michael Pittman Jr., Adonai Mitchell, Alec Pierce, and Jelani Woods in the mix, it’s easy to see how Indianapolis’ attack could be even more lethal this season.

The Colts are also blessed to have the seventh-easiest schedule in 2024, per Sharp Football Analysis. They’ll have a terrific opportunity to end the year on a high note as they face the Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, and Jaguars — who averaged 6.6 wins last season — in their final five games of the year.

If everyone stays healthy and does their part, the Colts could potentially be a 10-win team next season.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers — o7.5 Wins (-145)

Nobody had high expectations for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. With Tom Brady leaving the franchise for retirement, a lot of people assumed that the Bucs would return to irrelevancy. Instead, Tampa Bay went on to have a nine-win campaign that led to an appearance in the NFC Divisional Round.

Even though they ultimately lost to the Detroit Lions, the playoff run had the Buccaneers fanbase feeling hopeful about the future.

Tampa Bay now heads into the 2024 season with a projected win total of 7.5 and I have a hard time imagining that they won’t surpass it. Like the Colts, the Buccaneers are fortunate enough to own the 11th-easiest schedule this fall. Although they will face Super Bowl threats like the Lions, Chiefs, and 49ers, they’ll also face some weaker opponents as five of their final seven games are against teams who had losing records last season.

The Buccaneers also did a good job at retaining their key free agents while adding the likes of Jordan Whitehead, Randy Gregory, and Ben Bredeson to the mix. Top-100 draft picks like Graham Barton, Chris Braswell, and Tykee Smith are also expected to make an impact.

Throw in the fact that they also play in the NFC South — one of the NFL’s worst divisions — and you can see why people shouldn’t sleep on the Buccaneers in 2024.

LA Rams — o8.5 Wins (-155)

It’s understandable if people are a bit down on the LA Rams this season. Although it’s only been a few years since the Rams won a Super Bowl, people are still down on them after Sean McVay’s team played to a 17-17 record across the last two seasons. That’s without mentioning the fact that they also lost superstar defender Aaron Donald to retirement earlier this offseason.

But even with Donald enjoying his post-playing days, let’s not act like the Rams are scrubs. They just won 10 games last season and have surpassed their projected win total in six out of seven campaigns since 2017. They didn’t go on a deep playoff run last spring, however, they still looked competitive in a one-point wild-card loss to the Lions.

The Rams are also doing their best to fill Donald’s void with rookie pass rushers Jared Verse and Braden Fiske. Although the duo might never reach Donald’s heights, they have enough potential to ensure that LA’s frontline remains respectable.

Additionally, the Rams’ offensive charge is still led by Super Bowl-winning QB Matthew Stafford, who still has the likes of Cooper Kupp, Puka Nacua, and Tyler Higbee at his disposal. There’s also third-year RB Kyren Williams, who’s looking to build off his first-ever 1,000-yard campaign.

At the end of the day, if you’re expecting the Rams to be on the outside of the playoff race, you’ll likely end up being disappointed this season.

Atlanta Falcons — o9.5 Wins (-140)

Do the Atlanta Falcons have what it takes to be a 10-win team? It’s a feat that the franchise hasn’t achieved since 2017, finishing each of the last six seasons with a losing record while averaging just 6.5 wins per year.

But things are different this time around. After years of inconsistent play in the QB room, the Falcons addressed the issue by signing veteran gunslinger Kirk Cousins to a four-year, $180 million contract in free agency. While Cousins has never been the top quarterback in the league, he’s still someone who’s thrown for nearly 40,000 passing yards and 270 touchdowns throughout his 12-year career.

If Cousins arrives as advertised, it isn’t hard to picture the Falcons hitting the Over on their 2024 NFL win total. After all, they hit the seven-win mark last year despite their plethora of offensive issues. Atlanta also has the privilege of owning the easiest schedule that doesn’t feature too many challenges outside of the Chiefs, Eagles, and Cowboys.

The addition of rookie defenders Ruke Orhorhoro, Bralen Trice, and Brandon Dorlus should also help elevate the defensive side of the ball.

With the franchise due for a winning season, the Falcons are a threat to finish with double-digit wins.
