As the Men’s Group Stage came to a close yesterday, the Women’s Group Stage of the Olympic Soccer Tournament ends today. The third match of Group Stage is always a thriller as teams are doing whatever is necessary to survive and advance to the Quarterfinals. There are some slight differences in the structure on the Women’s side of things, so let’s discuss those and find our best bets!
The Men’s Olympic Tournament featured 16 teams in 4 groups of 4. Very easily, the top 2 teams in each group advance to the 8 team Quarterfinal bracket. On the Women’s side, we only have 12 teams, just 3 groups of 4. The Top 2 teams in each group advance automatically, with the 2 remaining spots being filled by the Top 2 3rd place teams. This will be decided on point differential, so even teams at the bottom of the groups could find a way to sneak in.
So far we have just two undefeated teams, who have already clinched their spot in the quarterfinals. They have not quite clinched their group, but they are sitting 3 points ahead of their opponents. The United States controls Group B, while Spain controls Group C, both with 2 wins and 6 points. No team has technically been completely eliminated yet, however Nigeria, Zambia, and New Zealand all sit with 0 points in their groups. Canada also has 0 points, but they have won both matches even with the point deduction penalty.
It should be an exciting day on the pitch, so let’s find our best bets!

This is a situational bet, as Spain is in 1st place of Group C with 6 points, and Brazil is in 3rd with 3 points. For Spain, a draw and one point would guarantee they top the group, and for Brazil, one point more than likely means they sneak through to the quarterfinals as a 3rd place team. Regardless, the Brazilians should be playing for the win, but this Spanish backline is tough.
Spain beat Japan 2-1 in their opener, allowing a goal in the 13th minute of play. They have shutout their opponents for the remaining 167 minutes of play. The Spaniards battled back, equalizing in the 22nd minute and eventually breaking through with a winner in the 74th. They controlled 75% of possession and allowed just 4 shots and 1 corner. In their next match, they shutout Nigeria 1-0, again dominated 76% of possession and allowing just 5 shots and 1 corner. I think they could make light work of Brazil.
However, I don’t think they over do it. Brazil also beat Nigeria 1-0, but then lost to Japan 2-1 last match. Japan scored the equalizing goal in the 90’+2′ on the penalty, and then won the game in the 90’+6′. This Brazil team will be very fired up and I see them giving the Spanish backline trouble. However Spain has no problem defending and playing this out to a draw.
Ultimately, I think Spain wins 1-0 (+700), but I’ll just bet on the Under 2.5.
Colombia vs Canada Best Bets
Kailen Sheridan and Canada are trying to advance even with a point deduction

Going against my better judgement, I’m taking an over in this match. Canada is fired up, they are enduring a point deduction but have 2 wins under their belt, and they know they need a win to have a chance at advancing to the Quarterfinals. Scoring 2 goals in each match, Canada has also conceded in the 1st half twice, once in the 13th minute against New Zealand. Colombia has the firepower to score, and I think Canada might leave themselves exposed trying to be aggressive on offense.
Colombia lost a 3-2 thriller against France, and striker Mayra Ramírez picked up a late red card. They handled business against New Zealand without her, winning 2-0, but her absence was certainly noticed. Back on the field against Canada, I can easily see both teams netting 2 goals in this match, as I expect to see some offensive fireworks. Colombia has taken 16+ shots in both matches so far, and produced 14 total corners.
Assuming France beats New Zealand, Colombia would need a win in order to top the group. Therefore, both teams are in desperate need of a win in this match.
With two very highly motivated teams, and one in complete desperation mode, I see this game going back and forth the entire 90 minutes, with plenty of chances on goal.
