UFC 304: Edwards vs Muhammad 2 Fight Preview

In Saturday’s rematch, oddsmakers heavily favor the champion to retain his gold at UFC 304. BetOnline is currently listing Leon Edwards as the -255 favorite over Belal Muhammad this weekend, carrying an implied win probability of 71.8%.

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t the first meeting between these welterweights. The duo previously headlined UFC Vegas 21, however, things, unfortunately, ended in a no-contest when Edwards accidentally poked Muhammad in the eye during the second round, forcing the official to end the fight prematurely.

Since that encounter, both fighters have been on a roll. Edwards heads into UFC 304 on a four-fight winning streak, which includes consecutive successful defenses against Kamaru Usman (via majority decision) and Colby Covington (via unanimous decision).

Meanwhile, Muhammad also has some momentum on the side with a perfect 5-0 record in his last five outings. Four of those victorious came via unanimous decision, including when he most recently defeated Gilbert Burns at UFC 288. Having said that, the victory took place 14 months ago, leaving time to tell if cage rust will affect the challenger this weekend.

As far as statistics, Edwards has the size edge in this fight, standing three inches taller with a two-inch reach advantage. He’s also more than three years younger than Muhammad, who just turned 36 earlier this month. Additionally, the champion has better striking accuracy (53% vs. 43%) and absorbs fewer significant strikes per minute (2.34 vs. 3.64) than the challenger.

In terms of grappling, both welterweights average similar numbers, however, Muhammad’s takedown defense (93%) is noticeably better than Edwards’ mark (70%).

UFC 304: Edwards vs Muhammad 2 Prop Bet Odds & Betting Trends

A glance at BetOnline’s Edwards vs. Muhammad 2 prop markets reveals how the UFC 304 main event could unfold.

For starters, BetOnlne is predicting a lengthy bout by favoring both the Over on the 4.5-round total and for the fight to go the distance (-200). It isn’t surprising given that 11 of Edwards’ last 15 fights went the distance while 12 of Muhammad’s previous 15 did the same.

It also helps that neither fighter is known for finishing opponents, proven by the pair boasting just 16 finishes in 53 combined bouts.

Will Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad go the distance in the UFC 304 main event?

Having said that, Edwards is favored to win this fight via points (+110). He’s 12-2 in his 14 previous fights that went the distance and is 9-0 in his last nine outings that involved some form of decision. Additionally, two of Muhammad’s three career losses came via unanimous decision.

If there’s an upset, Muhammad’s top path is to win by points (+310), which makes sense considering that the champion has never been finished.

If there is a finish, Edwards is most likely to win by KO/TKO (+300) — something he’s done seven times throughout his career. He’s only knocked out one of his last eight opponents, though, and now faces Muhammad, who hasn’t been KO’d in nearly eight years.

For those looking for a more precise finish time, Edwards is favored to win via KO/TKO in Round 1 (+900). That’s something he’s only done three times in his career with just one of those instances occurring since he made his UFC debut 10 years ago.

UFC 304: Edwards vs Muhammad 2 Predictions & Best Bet

I predict a successful championship defense at UFC 304. Let’s not forget that Edwards was on his way to dominating Muhammad in their first meeting, leading 19-8 in significant strikes with 48% accuracy to the latter’s 30%. We also haven’t seen the challenger fight in over a year and it wouldn’t be shocking if the layoff makes the champion too tough to handle.

With that in mind, let’s back Edwards to win by unanimous decision. Again, Edwards goes the distance more often than not to get the job done and he was on his pace to do ing so against Muhammad back in 2021. With the size and striking advantage, along with the fact that nine of his 12 career decision victories were unanimous, I see that trend continuing for Edwards this weekend.
