NASCAR Xfinity Series Mission 200 at the Glen Predictions & Picks: Will SVG Rule the Road Yet Again?

Last week, the NASCAR Xfinity Series playoffs puzzle inched closer to completion, as Austin Hill’s victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway left drivers on the outside looking in with only two more chances to lock down one of the remaining open spots. With the series at Watkins Glen this week for Saturday’s Mission 200 at the Glen (3:00 pm ET, USA Network), the odds are not highly favorable for one of those drivers to lock down a spot ahead of next week’s regular season finale at Bristol.

That would be because a driver who is already locked into the playoffs is a heavy favorite to win. Shane van Gisbergen is only 12th in the points standings, but with three wins, he is tied for the series lead with Hill, who beat out Parker Kligerman for the win at Atlanta.

All three of SVG’s wins this season have come on road courses. He won the Pacific Office Automation 147 at Portland and the Zip Buy Now, Pay Later 250 at Sonoma back-to-back in June and The Loop 110 in Chicago in July. So, it’s rather understandable why odds at BetOnline and Bovada have SVG as a firm favorite to win at Watkins Glen.

With his second top-three finish in three races, Kligerman is now 74 points ahead of Ryan Sieg, who finished 32nd at Atlanta, for a playoff spot. That means he has one foot and a bit more in the playoffs, but his spot isn’t secure. Neither is Sammy Smith’s, though the 44-point advantage he holds over Sieg after finishing seventh last weekend means he is in a strong position unless a non-playoff driver wins either the Mission 200 at the Glen or next Friday’s Food City 300 at Bristol.

2024 NASCAR Xfinity Series Points Standings (Entering the Mission 200 at the Glen)

Drivers in bold have won at least one race this season.

  1. Justin Allgaier – 866
  2. Cole Custer – 832
  3. Chandler Smith – 799
  4. Austin Hill – 795
  5. J. Allmendinger – 744
  6. Sheldon Creed – 723
  7. Riley Herbst – 693
  8. Jesse Love – 693
  9. Parker Kligerman – 674
  10. Sammy Smith – 644
  11. Ryan Sieg – 600
  12. Shane van Gisbergen – 574
  13. Sam Mayer – 542

Eight spots are already locked up courtesy of victories, while Allmendinger and Creed are now certainties to make it on points no matter what happens at Watkins Glen or Bristol.

That leaves two spots up for grabs, but if things play out according to the odds, someone will not win their way in on Saturday.

Mission 200 at the Glen Predictions & Picks

Austin Hill to finish in the top five (+375)

Hill secured an Atlanta sweep by winning last Saturday’s Focused Health 250, and that bodes well for a strong finish in the Mission 200 at the Glen. Last weekend’s win was his ninth career Xfinity Series win, and in the previous eight instances, he finished in the top ten in the next race six times and in the top five three times. Also, in Hill’s Xfinity Series career, Watkins Glen is the only road course where Hill has yet to record a top-ten finish. So, he’s certainly due here.

Sam Mayer to win Group A (Creed, Custer, Kligerman, Mayer) and finish in the top five (both +250 at Bovada)

Of Mayer’s four wins last season, three were on road courses, including this race. He has come up empty in four road races this season, with a best finish of third at Sonoma. But with his success at this track and his ability on road courses, the odds for both of these bets are far, far too good to pass up.

Shane van Gisbergen to win the Mission 200 at the Glen

SVG is making his Watkins Glen debut on Saturday, but the experienced road course racer should take to it like he did the Chicago street course in his Cup Series debut last year and Portland and Sonoma in the Xfinity Series this year.

It remains to be seen how seriously much of a factor he will be in the Xfinity Series playoffs, which features only one road race (the Drive for the Cure 250 at the Charlotte roval on October 12). But that one road race is the last race of the Round of 12, and accumulating five more extra bonus points for a win will increase his hopes of being able to make the Round of 8 without necessarily needing to win that race.
