Padres vs Nationals Predictions & MLB Picks Today (7/25)

The Padres head into this afternoon’s affair looking to sweep the Nationals. After winning 4-0 in the series’ first game, San Diego followed up that effort with a 12-3 blowout win over Washington less than 24 hours ago.

Things didn’t look great as the Padres trailed 3-0 after the first inning, however, they quickly rebounded by scoring 12 unanswered runs. San Diego’s batters wound up combining for a whopping 20 hits, led by Xander Bogaerts and Jackson Merrill each recording four hits.

The victory wasn’t anything new for the Padres, who’ve won four straight matchups following yesterday’s victory. Additionally, San Diego is 6-1 SU across its last seven road games, outscoring those opponents by an average of 2.6 runs per game. It’s been a team effort throughout that stretch, highlighted by Bogaerts, Merrill, Jurickson Profar, and Jake Cronenworth each recording at least nine hits while batting .310 or better.

As for the Nationals, this series has brought them back down to earth after they began the second half of the campaign with a three-game winning streak. Washington just can’t seem to get anything done against NL West teams and that’s clear by its 7-13 SU record against the division in 2024.

For reference, San Diego is 12-12 SU vs. the NL East.

Xander Bogaerts has been one of the Padres’ best players on the road lately.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Nationals are now 0-5 SU against the Padres during the 2024 MLB season. Considering how Washington was outscored 40-21 on aggregate in those contests, it’s easy to see why it’s hard to have faith in the home team — especially when it’s 1-5 SU in its last six games vs. San Diego at Nationals Park.

Nationals LHP Patrick Corbin’s struggles also make it difficult to back the hosts. The two-time All-Star southpaw has only produced a win in one of his last 12 starts, pitching to a 5.00 ERA while striking out just 50 batters across 68 1/3 innings. It didn’t help that Washington only averaged 2.8 runs per game in those contests.

Meanwhile, MLB strikeout leader Dylan Cease has been wheeling and dealing lately. The former NL Cy Young finalist not only has a 2.64 ERA in his last five starts, but he also averaged 12.6 Ks per nine innings in those matchups and hasn’t even allowed an earned run in his last two starts (13 innings).

Padres RHP Dylan Cease is playing some of his best baseball at the moment.

Taking the last few games and the entire season series into account, the Padres should win today. San Diego has outscored Washington by an average of 3.8 runs per meeting in 2024 and I don’t see that trend stopping given Corbin’s struggles this year. As long as the visitors keep doing what works, victory will be theirs.

With that being said, let’s take the Padres to cover the run line seeing as how four of their five wins over the Padres this season came by two or more runs.

Even though his campaign was interrupted by injury, Bogaerts has been money when it comes to this prop. In his last 13 games (50 ABs), the two-time World Series winner is slashing .360/.353/.480 while racking up 18 hits and two homers. He also averaged 1.8 total bases per outing during that stretch, finishing with the Over eight times.

Considering how he’s 4-0 on this prop in his last four outings, there are plenty of reasons to have faith in Bogaerts today.
