We’ve got a classic rivalry for Sunday Night Baseball this week as the Boston Red Sox travel down to New York to take on the Yankees! This current series is all tied up at 1 game a piece, but Boston leads the overall season series, 3-2, with several meetings to go. However, the Yankees are the ones with the last laugh currently, as they sit 5.5 games ahead of Boston in the AL East standings. There is still plenty of baseball left to be played this summer, but both squads are already thinking about playoff positioning and making a deep run in October.

Will Red Sox Shell Luis Gil?

Luis Gil started out red hot for the Yankees, and is currently looking for his 10th win of the season. However, he’s been looking for it for several starts now. Gil has lost 3 straight starts, giving up 16 runs in just 9.2 innings and allowing a home run in all 3 starts. To put those numbers into perspective, that’s a 15.65 ERA and a 2.50 WHIP, drastically different than his overall numbers.
His home and away splits aren’t that drastic, but he was at home for 2 of those 3 rough starts, and tonight things don’t get any easier. Boston hits .252 overall, .254 against RHP and .256 on the road, so we shouldn’t see any severe changes in their hitting tonight. The Red Sox had won 5 games straight before losing to New York last night, but it will be interesting to see Crawford pitch.
Kutter Crawford is coming off a road win, and has won 2 of his L3 starts, but doesn’t have much else to show for it. He’s only won 2 road games on the season, but he does have a win against the Yankees already this year. Crawford pitched 6 innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out 9 batters en route to a 9-3 Red Sox win. Ironically, Gil has also seen this Boston lineup and picked up a win against them. In fact, that was Gil’s last win on the season, which was almost a month ago.

We’re betting on the juiced balls coming out tonight in New York, even with two studs on the mound. Look, they both pitched well the last time they saw this lineup, however they have not been great in recent games. Because of this, I think the hitters certainly have an advantage tonight in this matchup, as they are used to the pitcher’s nasty stuff.
Plus, who doesn’t love a little conspiracy theory?!
Since the start of June, 4 of the L5 Sunday Night Baseball games have gone over this number, and not particularly close either. Last week we saw an 11-2 beat down, and two weeks ago these two teams actually played to a 9-3 Red Sox victory on the shoulders of Mr. Crawford. Now, I’m not saying they are purposefully tossing out the juiced balls for these games, but if you wanted more eyeballs on your sport, wouldn’t you orchestrate some extra offense on national television?
