Jacksonville Jaguars vs Miami Dolphins: NFL Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (9/8)

Two of our NFL teams in Florida face off this weekend, as the Miami Dolphins host the Jacksonville Jaguars at Hard Rock Stadium this weekend. While these teams are not in the same division, both want to prove to the other than they run the Sunshine State, so we are in for a great matchup. Tua Tagovailoa leads the Dolphins against newly paid QB Trevor Lawrence and the Jaguars on Sunday at 1:00pm Eastern.

These squads have not seen each other since October of 2021, where the Jaguars beat the Dolphins in Jacksonville, 23-20. Tua threw for 329 yards and 2 TDs with just 1 interception, and this was prior to the Tyreek Hill in Miami era. Jaylen Waddle had 10 receptions for 70 yards and both of Tua’s touchdowns, but Lawrence and company got the last laugh. The Jaguar QB threw for 319 yards and a touchdown which was enough to get the job done. Now, these rosters do look completely different since that matchup, so let’s see what we are working with.

Jaguars Roster Updates

While Jacksonville saw the loss of Calvin Ridley, they did hang on to Christian Kirk and Evan Engram to catch passes, plus Travis Etienne is a very prolific running back. The Jaguars added wideout Gabe Davis and drafted Brian Thomas Jr. out of LSU to round out a sneaky talented WR room. The defense will need to step up, as they allowed 342 yards and over 21 points per contest last season. After not making too many offseason moves other than signing their young QB,  the Jaguars will rely on some rookie draft picks to make an immediate impact on defense. I’m not sure if this will be enough to stop the electric offense of the Miami Dolphins.

Could Lawrence go into enemy territory and pull off the upset? Or will Tua, Tyreek and the speedy Dolphins handle their Week 1 foe at home?

Will Dolphins Take Down Jaguars at Home?

Can Tyreek Hill and the Dolphins get the win at home to start their season?

Everyone knows what this Dolphin’s offense is capable of. We saw it last season. They compiled over 400 yards per game, and added on nearly 30 points in the process, ranking 1st and 2nd in the league in those stats. This season, they really show no signs of slowing down.

Miami has a new TE in Jonnu Smith, but other than that, Tua’s supporting cast is exactly the same, just one more year in sync. Hill, Waddle and Berrios are paired with the speedy combo pack of Devon Achane and Raheem Mostert in the backfield, giving Tua plenty of options to spread the ball around the field. Against a defense that is young and ultimately not that great, I see them having a field day at home to start the season. I see them scoring at will against the Jaguars, with little to no push back from their opponent. Miami will be able to move the ball however they please in warm weather and at home, so I expect them to be just as explosive as they were last season.

Dolphins Underrated Defense

While I do think Jacksonville is able to find the end zone, I am high on this Dolphin’s defense. Miami added Calais Campbell to help stop the run, and signed veteran safety Jordan Poyer to help a secondary that already has Kendall Fuller and Jalen Ramsey at cornerback. I think Lawrence could put up some serious numbers, simply because I think he’s going to be throwing the ball a ton. If the Dolphins jump out to an early lead, which I expect them to do, the Jaguars will be playing from behind, and therefore airing it out. Miami ranked 7th in the league in rushing yards allowed per game last season, and with the signing of Campbell, I could see them being even better. Plus, the fact that they will score in bunches means they should have their opponents playing catch up most of the season.

I think books are hangin the -3.5 with the hook to scare people off of Miami, well it’s not working for me. I will be backing the Dolphins in Hard Rock on Sunday.

Don’t be afraid of the hook! I see the Dolphins winning this game by at least a touchdown to be totally honest with you. This team put on an offensive clinic last season, and yes, everyone has those tapes, but Mike McDaniel is a genius. With the speed and weapons that he has, he know exactly how to switch up the schemes to find success on the field. He clearly has the team bought in, and after last season’s collapse in the last few weeks, Miami should be incredibly motivated.

This is a home game that they need to win because they have their sights set on an AFC East division title. Clearly, the Dolphins need a home playoff game to have any postseason success, as traveling to the fridge Midwest didn’t go too well for them last year. Obviously there is an entire season to be played, but Miami is not going to let any easy wins slip away from them. Like I said, I think the hook is to scare some public Joe’s away, which is why we are finding -3.5 for nearly even money. Don’t be afraid, and back this explosive Miami offense to get the job done on Sunday.
