The NL East rivals opened this series on Thursday as the Phillies notched a 5-4 win over the Braves. Philadelphia entered the bottom of the sixth inning down 4-0 before Brandon Marsh and Nick Castellanos hit home runs in back-to-back innings to seal the deal for the home team.
The win increased the Phillies’ NL East lead over the Braves to six games with one month remaining on the schedule. Meanwhile, Atlanta currently holds the final National League wild-card spot as four teams within 6.5 games sit behind them.
Last night’s game also ended a three-game winning streak for the Braves, who are 12-6 SU since Aug. 12. The Phillies have also been playing well in recent weeks as they prepare to enter tonight’s contest with a 10-5 SU record in their last 15 games. Philadelphia also has a 60.0% winning percentage against its division rivals this season whereas Atlanta owns a 53.7% success rate in that regard.
We’ll see if the Phillies’ trend continues, especially when you consider that they’re 43-20 SU as home favorites this season. As for the Braves, they’re only 9-10 SU when the odds aren’t on their side on the road.
Playing at Citizens Bank Park tends to give the Phillies an edge.
MLB betting enthusiasts will also be treated to quite the pitching duel this evening.
Braves RHP Reynaldo Lopez is in the middle of a career year as he’s 7-4 with a 2.02 ERA through his first 21 starts. Even though he hasn’t won a start since July 7, Lopez has pitched to an impressive 1.29 ERA after allowing just two earned runs with 19 strikeouts across his last three starts (14 innings).
That’s without mentioning how Lopez is 1-0 with a 0.82 ERA in two matchups against Philadelphia in 2024.
After a slump in July, LHP Ranger Suarez returned to the Phillies’ rotation during last week’s 11-2 win over the Kansas City Royals. The 29-year-old Venezuelan hurler struck out six batters with one run allowed in the win, leaving time to tell if he can parlay that momentum into more success.
Suarez has also faced the Braves twice this season, failing to win either contest as he played to a 7.20 ERA along the way.

After losing last night, I see the Braves getting some revenge today. Atlanta would have won yesterday had its pitchers successfully closed out the game. With that in mind, I expect more of a complete effort tonight — especially with Lopez on the mound. As good as Suarez has been, he’s been hard to predict lately, meaning a Braves win is the safer pick this time around.
As for the best bet, let’s go with the Under on the 8-run total. The Under is 8-3 in Atlanta’s last 11 games as well as 5-2 in Philadelphia’s seven previous NL tilts. The last six Braves-Phillies matchups also averaged 5.8 combined runs while finishing with fewer than eight five times.
Considering the pitching matchup we have today, backing the Under is the correct call.

The All-Star hurler has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 18 of his first 21 starts — including the last three — which is a success rate of 85.7%. And while pitching at Citizens Bank Park isn’t easy, the Under is a promising 5-1 in Lopez’s last six road games. That’s without mentioning how the Under is also 4-0 in his last four meetings with the Phillies.
With tonight’s matchup projected to be a low-scoring affair, taking the Under on this prop is a solid decision.
