You don’t have to go too far back to see when these AL East rivals last met. They clashed at Rogers Centre just last week, resulting in a three-game sweep for the Red Sox as they outscored the Blue Jays by an average of 3.0 runs per game.
Interestingly enough, being swept by the Red Sox is what started the Blue Jays’ six-game losing streak. Toronto has struggled to put up runs during its skid, being held to three or fewer in five of those losses. John Schneider’s club has now been outscored 37-18 in the last six outings.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox have been trending in the opposite direction. Despite some early struggles in the season, they have turned things around with a 9-2 SU record in their last 11 games, giving them sole possession of the AL’s final wild card spot.
For reference, the Blue Jays sit 6.5 games behind the Red Sox due to their latest struggles.
The Blue Jays are stuck in a rut. Can they reverse their fortunes tonight?
The Blue Jays haven’t pulled off many upsets this season, going 7-22 SU as the underdog thus far. Conversely, the Red Sox are only 10-15 SU as home favorites in 2024.
To pull off the upset, Toronto needs a big day from Chris Bassitt. The 35-year-old veteran has been on quite the tearing, pitching to a 1.50 ERA with 36 strikeouts in as many innings across his last six starts. That includes when Bassitt only gave up two earned runs with six strikeouts to the Red Sox last week.
Speaking of Boston, the home team is turning to Tanner Houck, who paces all AL pitchers with a 2.14 ERA. The former 2017 first-rounder also hasn’t lost a start since May 15, going 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in his last six appearances. Opposing batters are also only slashing .199/.240/.267 against him during that stretch.
Can Blue Jays RHP Chris Bassitt match Red Sox RHP Tanner Houck pitch-for-pitch?
With the way things have gone for both clubs, I’m backing the Red Sox to win. The Blue Jays are struggling to both score and limit runs lately whereas the Red Sox have beaten some solid teams in the last few weeks. It’ll be a close contest, however, Boston’s recent momentum gives an edge to the home team.
Additionally, I recommend backing the Under on the 8.5-run total. Both Bassitt and Houck are playing some of their best baseball of the season and aren’t showing signs of slowing down. The Under is also 6-3 in the last nine Toronto-Toronto matchups.
