The standings indicate that the Yankees are still one of the MLB’s best teams, but it sure hasn’t felt that way lately.

The Bronx Bombers begin the 2024 Subway Series in somewhat of a rut, having gone 2-6 SU across their last eight games. The rough patch means they’re now tied with the Cleveland Guardians for first in the American League despite being in sole possession of the honor not that long ago.

The inability to halt the opposition’s offense has been the main reason behind those struggles. After all, the Yankees surrendered 7.1 runs per game during that stretch.

The Mets, meanwhile, have been one of baseball’s hotter teams. After a rough start to the year, Carlos Mendoza’s club is just two wins away from the .500 mark after going 13-4 SU across the last 17 games. Their 71.4% winning percentage along the way is No. 1 in the Majors.

The Mets have been flying high throughout June, winning 13 of their last 17 games.

Tonight’s matchup also marks the Mets’ return to Citi Field, where they’ve won five games in a row by a plus-3.4 average run margin. At the same time, we can’t ignore that the Yankees are winners of 15 of their last 20 road games while owning a 9-3 SU away record against the National League in 2024.

Conversely, the Mets are just 5-10 SU against AL clubs overall this season.

The Yankees are interested in seeing how Gerrit Cole fares in his second start of the year after giving up two earned runs on three hits to the Baltimore Orioles across four innings last week. The reigning AL Cy Young winner last faced the Mets back on June 14, 2023, striking out eight batters with one run allowed in a 4-3 loss for the Yankees.

Meanwhile, the Mets are rolling with David Peterson, who’s off to a solid start with a 3-0 with a 3.97 ERA through four appearances. Unfortunately, the 28-year-old southpaw struggled in his two previous starts against the Yankees, allowing five earned runs, a homer, and four walks in just 4 1/3 innings.

Yankees RHP Gerrit Cole needs a bounce-back performance after looking fairly average in his 2024 debut.

Even though luck hasn’t been on their side lately, I’m taking the Yankees to open the Subway Series with a win. They’re due to bounce back and I see that happening tonight against Peterson, who’s only had nightmare starts against the Bronx Bombers. Besides, the Mets are just 2-4 SU in the last six games against their crosstown rivals.

With that being said, we’ll stick with a Yankees moneyline bet before turning our attention to the best prop.
