Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions & Picks: Will Favorite Kim Get It Done in Detroit?

Following the final signature event of the 2024 PGA Tour season, we won’t see many of the tour’s best talents until they head across the pond to prep for next month’s Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland. But while this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic doesn’t have the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, or Xander Schauffele, a solid field will tee it up for the $9.2 million in prize money up for grabs at Detroit Golf Club.

After a rough week at the U.S. Open, Scheffler unsurprisingly bounced back last week by defeating Tom Kim in a playoff to win the Travelers Championship. It was Scheffler’s fourth signature event win of the season and his sixth overall. The world number one now has $27,696,858 in prize money this season, more than $5 million more the two men behind him, Xander Schauffele ($12,636,360) and Rory McIlroy ($10,034,665) have won combined.

The highest-ranked name on the money list participating in the Rocket Mortgage Classic is Chris Kirk, who is tenth at $5,277,152 thanks in large part to the $3.6 million he took home for his season-opening signature event win in Hawaii.

Kirk could do with a good week in Detroit, as he has only one top-ten finish since his Sentry Tournament of Champions win. He isn’t among the Rocket Mortgage Classic favorites, however.

Sitting atop the tournament winner odds is Kim, who led after each of the first three rounds at TPC River Highlands. On Sunday, he birdied his final hole to force a playoff with Scheffler but fell short of his first win of the year.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the Rocket Mortgage Classic?

Odds do come into play when thinking about my favorites for a tournament, but current form and previous course or tournament results factor heavily into which golfers get the nod.

Below are the six golfers I feel are the most likely to lift the trophy and take home a $1.65 million check come Sunday.

Tom Kim (+1400)

After winning twice and finishing in the top ten in the U.S. Open (tied for eighth) and The Open Championship (tied for second) last season, Kim has not flourished this season.

But he came agonizingly close to slaying the beast last week, and that should send him into this week’s tournament with a lot of confidence about being able to go on a sustained stretch of success.

Cameron Young (+1400)

Young’s 11-under 59 on Saturday was one of the highlights of the Travelers Championship, and it helped him record his first top-ten finish since tying for ninth at the Masters in April.

In his lone previous Rocket Mortgage Classic appearance, Young finished tied for second in 2022, coming in five strokes behind tournament winner Tony Finau.

Akshay Bhatia (+2000)

Bhatia, who won the Valero Texas Open earlier this year, tied for fifth last week. That strong showing in Connecticut came a week after he posted the best major finish of his young career, a tie for 16th at the U.S. Open.

Taylor Pendrith (+2800)

In his two previous Rocket Mortgage Classic appearances, Pendrith finished tied for 14th last year and tied for second in 2022. In 2022, he went into the final round tied for the lead, but an even-par 72 saw him finish five strokes behind 54-hole co-leader and eventual winner Finau, who shot a five-under 67.

The Canadian heads into this year’s tournament in decent form, having finished in the top 25 in six of his last nine tournaments, including a win at the Byron Nelson last month. In his first nine tournaments this season, he had six missed cuts.

Stephan Jaeger (+3300)

Jaeger’s best results to date this season were before April, as he bested Scheffler, Finau, and others by a stroke to win the Texas Children’s Houston Open in March and finished tied for third at both the Farmers Insurance Open and Mexico Open.

Since his win in Houston, Jaeger’s best finish in eight tournaments is a tie for 18th at the RBC Heritage in April. But he tied for ninth in last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic and fifth in 2022, so look out for the 35-year-old German this week.

Taylor Moore (+5500)

Since finishing tied for 12th at the PGA Championship, Moore has three missed cuts (Charles Schwab Challenge, Memorial, and U.S. Open) and a tie for 68th (Travelers Championship) in four tournaments.

That form isn’t particularly encouraging, but his past results in this tournament are. He tied for fourth last year, three strokes behind playoff competitors Rickie Fowler, Adam Hadwin, and Collin Morikawa. The year before, he finished alone in sixth.

Rocket Mortgage Classic Predictions & Picks

Rocket Mortgage Classic Winner Prediction & Pick: Tom Kim (+1400)

Picking a favorite isn’t always the way to go, even when Scheffler is involved.

But this is a great spot to back Kim. Along with his superb showing at the Travelers Championship, he has played well at Detroit Golf Club in the past, finishing seventh in this tournament in 2022.

Beyond Kim, Young and Pendrith are the other names that stand out to me as potential winners. If you are looking for someone with longer odds to potentially contend for the win, Moore or Fowler are worth a look.

Fowler isn’t in the form he was in entering last year’s Rocket Mortgage Classic, but you can’t count him out here.

Alex Noren to finish in the top 20 (+160)

Noren has two missed cuts in his last three tournaments (RBC Canadian Open and U.S. Open). But in addition to some solid finishes in notable events (tied for 12th at the PGA Championship, tied for 19th at the Players Championship, tied for 22nd at the Memorial), Noren has several strong finishes in tournaments like this one.

He finished tied for ninth at the Cognizant Classic, tied for 11th at the Texas Children’s Houston Open, tied for 14th at the Valero Texas Open, and third at the Byron Nelson.

Also, in his last two Rocket Mortgage Classic appearances, he finished tied for ninth last year and tied for fourth in 2021. This is one of my “run, don’t walk” picks for this week.

Taylor Pendrith to finish in the top 20 (+175)

Between his previous results in the Rocket Mortgage Classic and his recent results on the PGA Tour, this is exceptional value. This is another of my “run, don’t walk” picks for this week’s tournament.

Taylor Moore to finish in the top 20 (+260)

Moore’s recent results may not be all that great, but I absolutely love the value here given his past success at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. Previous success and familiarity can both be very helpful in a slump-busting spot like this one.
