This afternoon’s matchup is a big one as far as the AL East standings are concerned. The Orioles head into today’s action just 1.5 games behind the Yankees for the division lead. Considering how there are only six games between these rivals after today, it’s easy to see why this is a must-win matchup for the visitors.
With yesterday’s win, the Orioles improved to 8-3 SU in their last 11 games against the Yankees. They’ve also won three of their last four trips to Yankee Stadium, outscoring the Bronx Bombers 29-14 on aggregate.
Additionally, Baltimore is 5-1 SU in its last six road games overall.
On the flip side, this is the Yankees we’re talking about, meaning they shouldn’t be underestimated. Aaron Boone’s club has only lost consecutive home games once since May 22, highlighting New York’s ability to bounce back from adversity.
Can the Yankees successfully avoid consecutive home losses?
Despite their dominance over the Majors, the Yankees have struggled against their own division in 2024. New York owns a 10-11 SU record against fellow AL East clubs, which includes being 5-3 SU at home. On the flip side, the Orioles are 18-7 SU against the division with a 10-3 SU road record.
Nevertheless, if Baltimore wants to continue that trend, Cole Irvin must solve his struggles against the Yankees. Meanwhile, the Yankees are rolling with Luis Gil, who’s currently tied for the fifth-best AL Cy Young odds (+1600) on BetOnline. The 26-year-old right hasn’t lost a start since April 15, going 9-0 with a 1.64 ERA and 76 strikeouts across 66 innings in his last 11 appearances.

Considering how Gil already manhandled the Orioles earlier this season, I can’t help but like the Bronx Bombers’ chances today.
We’ll also keep things simple with an outright Yankees bet seeing as you can’t go wrong with -125 odds on the home team.
