Tonight the tournament officially kicks off as the defending Copa America and World Cup Champions, Argentina, take on a team looking to make a name for themselves on the International Soccer stage, Canada.

Can Canada Compete with #1 in the World?

Now, Canada currently ranks 49th in the World, while Argentina ranks 1st. Argentina is coming off a 2022 World Cup Championship, as well as a 2021 Copa America Championship, and as Messi is aging out of international soccer, he will be trying to add as much hardware to his resume as possible. This group is Argentina’s to lose, and this game is certainly one where they should handle business.
Argentina’s well known stars are getting old, but there’s tons of young talent ready to step up. Lionel Messi, Angel Di Maria, and Nicholas Otamendi are all 36 years old, but 19 year old Alejandro Garnacho scored the winner in the FA Cup Final for Manchester United, and is ready to add to his 5 international caps. Julian Alvarez is 24 from Manchester City, and 26 year old Lautaro Martinez is brilliant for Inter Milan. From the front to the back, this is easily the most complete team in the tournament. Does Canada stand a chance?
While the English Premier League is heavily represented on Argentina’s sideline, that is not the case for Canada. The MLS is represented by a majority of Canada’s player’s with a few outliers of course. Alphonso Davies reigns from Bayern Munich, Stephen Eustáquio from Porto, and Jonathan David from LOSC Lille. Canada is very outmatched in my most humble opinion. I think their defense will hold strong, but this Argentinian attack will be too much to handle.
I see Canada spending most of their time on their heels playing defense, trying to combat Messi’s attack. If you’ve bet soccer with me, you know where I like to put a lot of my coins, and yes, I am once again, betting on the under tonight.

We are paying some serious juice for some push potential, but look, I think this ends 2-0 Argentina (+500). I worry about them getting too offensive and potentially scoring 3 by themselves, but I also fear Canada some how sneaking one in if Argentina takes their foot off the gas late in the 2nd half. I’m only risking a half unit on this play to win 0.33 unit, but we are paying for our push possibility and I’m okay with that.
I see Canada coming out defensive, trying to hold Argentina scoreless, and maybe succeeding for the first 45 minutes. Eventually, I see them breaking through the back line and finding the back of the net at least once, possibly twice. Argentina could easily control 67% possession in this match, and make it very difficult on the Canadien defenders. As tonight’s only Copa America match, all eyes are on Messi and Argentina, and I think they show the world they are primed and ready to compete for the 2nd straight Copa America, and 3rd straight International Trophy.
