The Cincinnati Reds (35-38) and Pittsburgh Pirates (35-38) will wrap up their three-game series at PNC Park when they collide on Wednesday at 12:35 p.m. ET.

After losing the first game, the Reds got some revenge with a 2-1 victory over the Pirates on Tuesday. Nick Lodolo struck out eight batters with one run allowed for his eighth win of the season as Santiago Espinal’s two-run homer was all Cincinnati needed to secure the win.

Will the Reds parlay their newfound momentum into another win? Or do the Pirates have what it takes to end the series on top?

Our MLB picks haven’t done amazing lately, but bad times can’t last forever. Let’s snap the skid as we dive into today’s Reds vs. Pirates predictions and best bets.

Reds vs Pirates Predictions & MLB Picks Today (6/19)

Time will tell who’ll emerge victorious from this afternoon’s series finale. Both clubs desperately need the room as they sit tied for third in the NL Central, putting them a single game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks for the National League’s third and final wild card position.

We’ll see if the Reds have it takes to win back-to-back outings — something they’ve done just once in their last eight games. They own a 3-5 SU record during that stretch and had even lost three straight games before yesterday’s win. Cincinnati’s inconsistencies can be attributed to an underwhelming offense that averaged only 2.9 runs in those games.

The Pirates haven’t been much better lately, going 4-4 SU in their eight previous contests. Having said that, they did win three of four games before losing to the Reds. Additionally, Pittsburgh is 4-2 SU as the favorite against fellow NL Central teams this season whereas Cincinnati is 3-5 SU as the divisional underdog.

Another trend that the Pirates have in their favor is that they’re 14-6 SU in their last 20 meetings with the Reds. That includes a 6-3 SU record at PNC Park since the beginning of the 2023 MLB season.

The Pirates have done a lot of winning against the Reds — especially at PNC Park.

Baseball enthusiasts could also be in for a pitching duel today.

The Reds are turning to starting pitcher Hunter Greene, who’s 5-2 with a 3.61 ERA and 1.178 WHIP through 14 starts. The former 2017 second-overall pick has been one of the NL’s better arms since a poor start to the year, going 5-0 with a 3.13 ERA and 53 strikeouts across 54 2/3 innings in his last nine appearances.

Having said that, Greene did surrender three earned runs and a homer on five hits across 3 1/3 innings in his lone career start in Pittsburgh.

The Pirates also have a reliable hurler on the mound in the form of Mitch Keller. While he’s been steady throughout the campaign, Keller has elevated his play at home, pitching to a 3-0 record and 0.83 ERA in his last three PNC Park appearances, striking out 17 batters along the way.

It’s also worth noting that the former MLB All-Star is 1-0 with a 3.32 ERA and 25 strikeouts in his last four matchups against the Reds.

Can Hunter Greene outperform Mitch Keller this afternoon?

I’m taking the Pirates to win at home today. The Reds got the last laugh yesterday, but the fact remains that the Pirates have owned their number the last two seasons. Cincinnati is also struggling to score runs, which could be an issue today since Keller has been near-flawless in his latest home starts.

Regardless of who wins, though, the Under on the 8.5-run total is the way to go. Let’s not forget that the Under is 9-1 in the Reds’ last 10 games as well as 7-1 in the Pirates’ most recent eight. The last 14 Cincinnati-Pittsburgh matchups also averaged 7.8 combined runs with the last three finishing with six or fewer.

Considering how we haven’t seen much offense at all this series, don’t expect fireworks in Pittsburgh.

Keller has been phenomenal this season, pitching to a 3.36 ERA through his first 14 starts. The Cedar Rapids, IA native’s play has only picked up as the season continues, proven by his allowing two or fewer earned runs in six of his last seven starts — including pulling through on this prop in each of his last three home games.

Given that this prop is 3-1 in his four career starts against the Reds, I don’t see Keller allowing a ton of runs today.
