Despite losing arguably the greatest college coach of all time in Nick Saban to retirement this past offseason, Alabama’s quarterback, Jalen Milroe, is poised for a massive season.
After a rocky start last year, Milroe experienced significant growth following his benching against Texas. The Crimson Tide went on to run the table until a hard-fought loss in the College Football Playoff against Michigan. During that run to a College Football Playoff berth, Milroe’s development was evident. He carved up Tennessee, LSU, and most notably Georgia in the SEC Championship. Many in the Alabama faithful believe he was unjustly left out of the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
This year, that narrative could change entirely. Under new head coach Kalen DeBoer, the expectations for Milroe—and the Alabama football team—remain sky-high. We’ve seen what DeBoer did with Michael Penix Jr. and the Washington Huskies offense in 2023. In case you need a reminder, Penix Jr. threw for 4,903 yards, 36 touchdowns, and earned a trip to the Heisman ceremony.
Alabama is in the top ten for returning players this season, with standout performers like running back Justin Haynes and offensive linemen Parker Brailsford and Tyler Booker leading the way. Along with these returning stars, Alabama boasts the third-best transfer portal ranking, bringing in one five-star and seven four-star recruits. This Alabama team will continue to be lethal, even without Saban at the helm.

Milroe’s path to the Heisman won’t be easy, with tough matchups against #1 Georgia at home, #15 Tennessee at Rocky Top, #13 LSU in Baton Rouge, and SEC newcomer #16 Oklahoma in Norman. But with the growth Milroe showed in 2023, coupled with the ups and downs that tested the Crimson Tide, 2024 is set to be a breakout year for the young quarterback. He’s primed for a monstrous season under DeBoer’s guidance.
When it comes to award futures, I typically shy away from the favorites. However, the value on Milroe is too good to pass up. No other candidate moves the needle for me like he does.
