Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks: Is Another Verstappen & Norris 1-2 in the Cards?

Will Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, who have consistently secured the top two positions in the recent Formula 1 races, repeat their success in Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix?

Verstappen and Norris have claimed the top two spots on the podium in five out of the last six races. Four out of those five times, Verstappen has taken the top spot. Norris, on the other hand, secured his first Formula 1 career win at the Miami Grand Prix just last month.

A repeat Verstappen-Norris 1-2 finish at the Red Bull Ring looks promising following their first and second finish in qualifying. Verstappen, who had not started on pole for three races in a row, unsurprisingly clocked the fastest time in Q3, earning his eighth pole of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Norris clinched the second position, while George Russell, Carlos Sainz Jr., and Lewis Hamilton also managed to finish within 65 seconds in Q3.

Starting Grid for the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix

  1. Max Verstappen
  2. Lando Norris
  3. George Russell
  4. Carlos Sainz Jr.
  5. Lewis Hamilton
  6. Charles Leclerc
  7. Oscar Piastri
  8. Sergio Perez
  9. Esteban Ocon
  10. Nico Hulkenberg
  11. Daniel Ricciardo
  12. Kevin Magnussen
  13. Pierre Gasly
  14. Yuki Tsunoda
  15. Fernando Alonso
  16. Alexander Albon
  17. Lance Stroll
  18. Valtteri Bottas
  19. Logan Sargeant
  20. Guanyu Zhou

Verstappen further extended his significant points lead with a win in the day’s sprint race, while Oscar Piastri edged out his McLaren teammate Norris to clinch second place.

Going into Sunday’s race, Verstappen currently has a 71-point lead over Norris, with Charles Leclerc trailing by an additional six points.

Does he stand a chance to enter next week’s British Grand Prix with a greater advantage? That’s what the predictions suggest. For the Austrian Grand Prix, the odds are heavily in favor of Verstappen, who is seen as a strong contender to clinch the race for an unprecedented fifth time and secure his eighth win out of the 11 races this season.

Austrian Grand Prix Predictions & Picks

Since Verstappen did not secure pole position in the Monaco, Canadian, and Spanish Grand Prix, there were some excellent value opportunities. However, with him back in his usual spot on the starting grid, these opportunities are not available this weekend.

Having said that, there are still some viable options. If you want to participate in the “Who will have the fastest lap at the Austrian Grand Prix?” Verstappen (+120) is a solid wager.

So far in the 2024 Formula 1 season, he only secured the fastest lap twice, during the Bahrain and Japanese Grand Prix. However, in his past four victories at the Austrian Grand Prix, he managed the fastest lap three times. He also achieved the fastest lap in the last three incarnations of this race, including the 2022 race won by Leclerc.

Recent Austrian Grand Prix Winners

  • 2023: Max Verstappen
  • 2022: Charles Leclerc
  • 2021: Max Verstappen
  • 2020: Valtteri Bottas
  • 2019: Max Verstappen
  • 2018: Max Verstappen
  • 2017: Valtteri Bottas
  • 2016: Lewis Hamilton
  • 2015: Nico Rosberg
  • 2014: Nico Rosberg

Furthermore, there is only one play, or rather two separate plays depending on the same outcome, that stands out to me in terms of value. So, essentially, it can be considered as one play.

Sergio Perez has not made it to the podium in five straight Formula 1 races. To break this streak at the Red Bull Ring, he will need to significantly advance from his starting position of eighth.

Although it may be a challenge, I am optimistic about his chances to secure a top-six finish, which would be an advancement considering his previous records of two eighth places and two DNFs in his last four races. The odds for Perez to finish in the top six and for Red Bull to have two drivers in the top six are both +125, so you have the option to bet on either or both if you strongly believe that Perez can break his recent streak. A poor performance by Perez in his team’s home race wouldn’t reflect well, so even a slight improvement could be a positive outcome for both him and Formula 1 bettors.

If you desire more activity and aren’t bothered by a bit of juice, betting on Hamilton (-140) to finish better than Leclerc (+110) is a solid choice. Hamilton has achieved his top two season results in his most recent races and secured his first 2024 podium last weekend in Spain. He is set to commence the Austrian Grand Prix from a favorable position, which is advantageous specifically for this bet.
