The immediate loss of Sykes is a significant setback for the Mystics, particularly considering the major impact she made upon her return.
Center Shakira Austin, along with Sykes, continues to be sidelined due to hip problems. Austin is set to miss her sixth consecutive game, having not played since Washington’s 90-79 defeat to the New York Liberty on May 31.
Nonetheless, one cannot disregard the Mystics tonight. Despite the absence of Sykes and Austin, Washington has been competitive, and they still have a chance of winning this game.
The Mystics achieved their third consecutive game scoring 80 points with their win on Tuesday. The last time they didn’t reach this mark was eight days ago when they lost 79-71 to the Sky at home. During that match, the Mystics led by nine points at halftime after scoring 44 points in the first half. However, they were outscored 25-10 in the third quarter and 44-27 in the second half, resulting in a 0-10 record.
Is it possible for the Mystics to deliver two solid halves this time? I believe they can and they will, despite Sykes’ absence once more. The challenges they have faced have allowed players across the board to contribute, which will be crucial for tonight’s victory.
