Arizona State's White declares for NBA Draft

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) Arizona State junior big man Romello White is joining teammate Remy Martin in declaring for the NBA Draft.

On Wednesday, White announced his decision, just two days following Martin’s declaration for the Draft.

“White said, “I’m pleased to announce that I have chosen to present my name to the NBA draft committee. My aim is to receive feedback as I strive to fulfill my lifelong dream of playing in the NBA.”

White, a power forward standing at 6-foot-8 from Atlanta, served as the primary inside presence for Arizona State during his junior year. He managed to average 10.2 points per game despite regularly facing double teams. He also had a shooting percentage of 57% from the floor and averaged 8.8 rebounds per game.

White’s freshman season was powerful, with an average of 10.5 points and 7.1 rebounds. However, there was a minor decline in his sophomore year.

The Sun Devils succeeded in reaching the NCAA Tournament during his initial two seasons and were on track to achieve this for three straight years – a feat not accomplished since 1980-81. However, this goal was thwarted when the college basketball season was canceled due to the coronavirus.

“Arizona State coach Bobby Hurley tweeted, ‘I strongly support Mello’s decision to explore the NBA draft process!!'”

If White and Martin stay in the Draft, the Sun Devils will need to fill several vacancies next season.

Arizona State suffered a loss with seniors Rob Edwards and Mickey Mitchell graduating. Additionally, three players – Khalid Thomas, Elias Valtonen, and walk-on Kyle Feit – have so far entered the transfer portal. These players didn’t see much playtime, but their departure along with the potential absence of White and Martin leaves Hurley with a depleted roster.
