Following what may potentially be the WNBA season’s lowest offensive performance, the Phoenix Mercury face the challenge of a quick recovery. They have another tough game against the New York Liberty tonight (7:00 pm ET, CBS Sports Network).
In a 70-47 defeat to the Connecticut Sun last night, the Mercury (3-3) only managed a field goal percentage of 23.8%. Out of 63 attempted shots, they made only 15 including a disappointing 1 out of 27 from three-point range. Prior to this game, they led the WNBA in made three-pointers per game and had the second highest perimeter percentage.
Playing another championship contender on the road the very next night is far from ideal, but it also eliminates the opportunity to dwell on a dismal performance. Could this lead to a powerful comeback? Or is another brutal defeat looming?

Are the Mercury returning to reality after a promising start to the season?
Phoenix struggled offensively against the Sun, after conceding 107 points in Saturday’s loss to the Dallas Wings.
Kahleah Copper and Diana Taurasi teamed up to score 60 points against Dallas, with Copper scoring 32 points (11 of 22 FG, 4 of 7 3PT, 6 of 7 FT) and Taurasi contributing 28 points (10 of 20 FG, 6 of 13 3PT, 2 of 2 FT). However, their performance against the Sun was less impressive, combining for just 13 points, making 4 of 25 from the field, and missing all 12 three-point attempts.
Is it unlikely for that to happen again, but can the Mercury still deliver a competitive performance at Barclays Center?
It could be the perfect timing to catch the Liberty. While it’s premature to worry about New York, their recent performances have been concerning. They suffered a defeat on their home ground to the Chicago Sky last Thursday, and then had a significant 84-67 loss to the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday.
Both teams are aiming to recover from weak offensive performances. I’m choosing to be hopeful and will opt for the over.
But can the Mercury beat the spread? Usually, I favor the underdog to cover such large spreads and this time is no exception, despite the Liberty being at home and the Mercury playing consecutive games.
