Last night, 2023 NASCAR Truck Series Rookie of the Year Nick Sanchez won from pole in the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Today, another former Rookie of the Year will aim to do the same there in the BetMGM 300, the 12th race of the Xfinity Series season (1:00 pm ET, FOX).
Last year’s Cup Series Rookie of the Year and 2021’s Xfinity Series Rookie of the Year, Ty Gibbs, will kick off his second Xfinity Series start of the season from the pole position. Notably, Gibbs clinched these rookie honors in his championship-winning season.
He is among a handful of Cup Series regulars participating in the BetMGM 300, including Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, and Noah Gragson. All of them are pulling double duty this weekend. Busch, a record five-time winner of this race, will join Gibbs in the front row for his inaugural Xfinity Series start in 2024.
Joe Gibbs Racing (Gibbs) and Richard Childress Racing (Busch) are two of the four teams that have claimed all 11 race victories this season, alongside JR Motorsports and Hendrick Motorsports. Austin Hill and Chandler Smith, both entering today’s race, have the highest number of wins this season, with two races each.
However, the accomplishments of their individual drivers pale in comparison to the overall success of the #20 car. It has seen victory with three different drivers: John Hunter Nemechek in Las Vegas, Aric Almirola in Martinsville, and Ryan Truex in Dover.
Will Gibbs be the fourth driver to steer the #20 to victory this season? So far, the only polesitter who has claimed a win this season is Kyle Larson, having triumphed at the Focused Health 250 at COTA in March.
Other drivers may offer better betting value, but considering the #20’s victories in 2024 and Gibbs’ past success at Charlotte—where he has ranked first, second, and fifth in three Xfinity Series starts—it’s advisable to include him in your BetMGM 300 picks regardless.
In addition to Gibbs, 2023 race champion Justin Allgaier also presents an attractive choice. Allgaier emerged victorious two weeks prior at Darlington, leading an impressive 119 out of 147 laps, securing his first win of the season.
