Aces vs Lynx Prediction & Picks (5/29): Ride with the Hot Hand

The Minnesota Lynx have arguably been the stand-out team in the WNBA season’s first two weeks, outshining even the undefeated Connecticut Sun. Will they maintain their strong start with a victory over the Las Vegas Aces tonight (8:00 pm ET, NBA TV)?

So far, the single setback for the Lynx (4-1) is their one-point overtime defeat to the Sun last Thursday. Their early record boasts two victories against the Seattle Storm, a 17-point triumph over the New York Liberty, and a 13-point win in Atlanta the night after their notable success against New York.

Will they be able to maintain their performance against the two-time reigning WNBA champions? The Aces (3-1) managed to score a season-high 99 points in their victory against the Indiana Fever on Saturday. However, their dominance has not been particularly noticeable as they maneuver through the absence of Chelsea Gray, who is still benched. Could they be in for a challenging night at the Target Center?

Las Vegas Aces vs Minnesota Lynx Betting Analysis

Without Gray, the Aces’ offensive performance is not at its peak. However, they still lead the WNBA in scoring, averaging 91.3 points per game. After a rocky start with just 6 of 29 three-pointers in their season opener against the Phoenix Mercury, they’ve significantly improved their outside shooting, making 37 of 97 (38.1%) in the subsequent three games.

However, there has been a slight deficiency in defense, which might impact tonight’s game.

This is a small sample size, obviously. There’s only so much you can read into about four games. But they have allowed 80+ points in each game, and they currently rank 10th in the league in scoring defense (85.0 PPG), ninth in field goal defense (44.8%), and last in three-point defense (41.8%).

That last number is especially glaring when they are giving 27.5 attempts (11th in the league) and 11.5 makes (last in the league) from outside per game.

Heading into tonight’s game, the Lynx have the highest three-point accuracy in the league, hitting 38.6% of their three-point shots. They demonstrated this skill in their two victories over the weekend against the Liberty and Dream. They shot 14 of 28 (50.0%) in their Saturday win against New York and 13 of 29 (44.8%) in their Sunday triumph over Atlanta.

The success has been largely attributed to veteran guard Kayla McBride and new recruit Alanna Smith.

Smith only managed to shoot 24.9% from three and 42.4% overall from the field in her initial five WNBA seasons. However, since joining the Lynx, she has significantly improved, shooting 64.1% (11 of 17) from three and 54.7% (29 of 53) overall from the field in her first five games.

McBride has only once achieved a 40.0% or higher three-point shooting rate in her career. However, this season she has managed to achieve a 51.4% three-point shooting rate (18 out of 35), and an overall field shooting rate of 53.7% (29 out of 54).

Just because the Aces have suffered some early losses without one of their main players, doesn’t negate the fact that they could still be the best team in the league. However, it does suggest that there could be a number of opportunities to capitalize on some great value in the meantime. Tonight could be one of those opportunities, as the Lynx not only have a good chance of challenging the champions, but also potentially taking the win.
