The 2024 Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp on the University of Pennsylvania campus in Philadelphia attracted a record 72 players from 21 different U.S. states and Canadian provinces.
Both players and Flyers Alumni eagerly await the annual Fantasy Camp in August, one of the year’s most anticipated events. This year’s camp was especially memorable as it marked the 10th anniversary, with celebrations on and off the ice from Friday through to Monday.
Steve Capoferri and the River Rock Academy team deserve congratulations for securing their sixth Fantasy Cup championship. They clinched a victory over Team Toyota, with a score of 7-1, in the championship match. Meanwhile, Team Results Guaranteed triumphed over Team Neumann University in the consolation game, ending with a score of 10-3.
Zach “Gunner” Stahl, a forward from Results Guaranteed, topped the tournament scoring chart with 17 points from four games (11g, 6a). John Romano, the center for Big River Rock, came in second with 12 points (9g, 3a).
The coaches of the four teams were comprised of twelve alumni from the Flyers.

Toyota (green jerseys): Andre Dupont, John LeClair, Patrick Sharp
Neumann (black jerseys): Ian Laperriere, Keith Jones, Joe Watson
River Rock (orange jerseys): Mark Howe, Mark Recchi, Paul Holmgren
Only half the fun at the camp comes from the on-ice sessions, which consist of one practice each, three round-robin games, and finally, the consolation and championship matches.
Every year, a welcoming reception takes place on the opening night where all players are introduced by the renowned Flyers public address announcer, Lou Nolan, who also performs PA duties at the Class of 1923 Arena. This year, the event saw coaches Joe Watson, Dupont and Kelly reminiscing about the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup championship seasons of the Flyers, with Steve Coates serving as the emcee.
The camp outing on Saturday, which usually takes place at an undisclosed “mystery” location, this year led everyone to a picturesque dinner at a rowing club on Boathouse Row.
Every Sunday, which marks the end of the camp, “Coatesy” always leads a Hot Stove session with a few special guest speakers from Flyers/NHL Alumni. This year, in celebration of the camp’s 10th anniversary, Alumni president Marsh, along with camp organizers Kelly and Rob Baer, went above and beyond to create an extraordinary experience. Camp attendees were taken to the Wells Fargo Center where they had the chance to walk through the same lit-up corridor that the Flyers players use during home games and explore the recently refurbished locker rooms.
Everyone then enjoyed a meal at the lavish Adrian restaurant, owned by Stephen Starr, followed by a Q&A session. The session, chaired by Steve Coates, featured panelists Sharp, Holmgren, LeClair and Recchi. It was an open discussion that covered a breadth of topics, from navigating trades to parenting young athletes or non-athletes with widely recognized surnames. LeClair and Recchi shared personal insights on the latter, emphasizing the importance of being supportive and encouraging their children to follow their passions, talents, and dreams.
This year’s Camp showcased a silent auction of distinctive Alumni collectables, with all earnings benefiting various Flyers Alumni programs and initiatives. These include the annual “Twelve Days of Christmas” charitable giving program carried out by the Flyers during the Holiday Season.
Before returning to the camp hotel on Sunday, Marsh offered a sneak peek of new events to the attendees of the Fantasy Camp that the Alumni will introduce in the following year. The year 2025 will witness an “Alumni Weekend” featuring three fundraising events over three days: a pickleball tournament in Malvern, a Walk, Run or Bicycle event, similar to the old Charity Classic format, in Conshohocken, and the 2025 version of the Alumni Golf Invitational at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington. Furthermore, during the NHL offseason, the Flyers Alumni are planning to host a unique golfing vacation trip to Ireland.
