Chargers OLB Joey Bosa being placed on injured reserve with foot sprain

Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Joey Bosa suffered a right foot sprain and is being placed on injured reserve, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported on Wednesday morning, per sources. Bosa has a chance to return this season, Rapoport and Pelissero added.

In a corresponding move, the Chargers are signing OLB Andrew Farmer II to the 53-man roster, Rapoport and Pelissero reported.

Head coach Brandon Staley informed reporters on Monday that Bosa would probably be placed on injured reserve.

Bosa exited the Chargers’ loss to the Packers on Sunday only four plays into the game, and was seen hopping off the field and going to his knees in pain on the sideline before riding the cart into the locker room while in tears. Bosa was later seen using crutches with a walking boot on the sidelines.

Bosa, who had recently recovered from a broken toe, an injury he powered through earlier this season missing only one game, will now be out for the next four games. This is a major setback for the Chargers’ pass rush, which will sorely miss their four-time Pro Bowl star in the crucial latter stages of the season.

Should this be the conclusion of Bosa’s 2023 season, it will end with him having participated in nine games (starting in five), boasting 6.5 sacks, 20 tackles, eight quarterback hits, and a forced fumble. Following a 2022 season where he only played five regular games due to groin surgery, it seems Bosa is on track for a second consecutive year of substantial playing time lost to injury.
