Orioles vs Mets: MLB Predictions, Odds & Best Bets (8/20)

Today, Citi Field will be the arena for game 2 of a 3 game series where two teams, the Mets and the Orioles, will compete. The Mets, who already triumphed in game 1 with a 4-3 victory, are the hosts for this match. On the other hand, the Orioles are in a competitive struggle with the other New York-based team in the AL East, currently trailing by a half game. This places them 2.5 games ahead of the Twins and Royals for the top Wild Card position. However, the Orioles are undeniably aiming for an AL East Title.

The Mets are currently trailing the Phillies by 8.5 games, but they’re only a game and a half away from the second spot in the NL East. They are in a competition with the Braves, who are presently holding the final Wild Card slot in the National League. However, the Braves have a tough week ahead as they face the Phillies. New York is aware of the need to secure several wins in order to qualify for the playoffs, and tonight’s home game presents an ideal opportunity to make progress.

Jose Quintana is up to pitch for New York, showcasing a significant improvement in his home game performances this season, despite having a few tough games recently. On the other hand, Dean Kremer is representing the Orioles, exhibiting better performances in away games, though he has also struggled in his recent starts. Will one of these pitchers guide their respective teams to a win tonight? Or will the game’s outcome be determined by the hitters?

Will Quintana Bounce Back at Home?

Is it possible for the left-handed Quintana to stop the Orioles’ bats?

Jose Quintana has seen his ERA fall to 3.72 at home this season, but his recent performances have been disappointing. In his last three starts, Quintana has a record of 0-2 with a high ERA of 6.89 and a WHIP of 1.58, allowing at least three runs in each game. At Citi Field, he has conceded four or more runs in two of his last three games. Quintana, a left-handed pitcher, will face a challenge as Baltimore has a reputation for hitting well against left-handed pitchers.

The Orioles have a .259 batting average against left-handed pitchers and have managed to hit .263 since the All Star Break. While Kremer is their pitcher for today’s game, I believe the Orioles can still generate some runs in this matchup. Although they lack top-tier hitters today, according to batters-box.com, they have four players with superior or above-average ratings. The Orioles have to make a comeback to remain competitive with the Yankees, and they will undoubtedly need to provide ample run support for their pitcher.

Dean Kremer recently secured a win, however, he suffered four consecutive losses prior to this. In his last seven performances, his record is a disappointing 1-5. He’s surrendered 21 runs for an ERA of 5.38 since July 9th. His WHIP has also swelled to 1.59 over the prior month. In short, his performance has been less than impressive. In his last three away games, Kremer has allowed at least three earned runs, and it’s likely the Mets could capitalize on this. The Mets have been successful in four of their last six games, having only allowed 16 runs in total. Yet, their inconsistent performance could hamper their progress.

The Mets have an overall team batting average of .250, which drops to .246 against right-handed pitchers, and further decreases to .236 when playing at home. Despite their average this August being slightly higher at .252, I believe they will need to score several runs in order to defeat the Orioles tonight.

This is not an attractive situation, and we’re sacrificing some for this position, but I believe the Orioles can score 4 runs today. They prefer to go up against a left-handed pitcher, and with Quintana’s recent poor performance, it’s the perfect opportunity for their batting to shine. Baltimore is aware that the Yankees have a challenging series against the Guardians, hence, gaining an advantage in this series would be extremely beneficial. This is especially true considering the Orioles will be up against the Astros and Dodgers after this Mets series.

In the end, I am banking on the Orioles to rally and score runs to back Kremer. I believe they can exceed Quintana’s number, but their F5 TT Over 1.5 (-165) was too risky even for me. Instead, I’ll support them to get 4 runs over the entire 9 innings. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait the full game to see a payoff!
